Purpose

To ensure the safety of members through risk managed approach to return to full active participation by members who have had significant illness, injury, surgery, medical intervention or similar.

Background

Camden Haven Dragon Boat Club is committed to ensuring the safety of members at all times. An important aspect of safety is the fitness of individual members and their capacity to cope with the physical challenges of active participation in dragon boating activities.

It is important that any member who has suffered a significant illness, injury, surgery, medical intervention or similar has a risk managed approach to their return to active participation.

Responsibilities

The Committee is responsible for ensuring this policy and associated procedure is readily accessible by all members.

All members are responsible for adhering to this policy.

Policy

No person may resume active participation in dragon boat activities after significant illness, injury, surgery, medical intervention or similar until approved by the Committee.

The Committee shall provide the returning member with a plan for resumption of active participation.

The Committee reserves the right to adjust and/or amend the plan at any time based on feedback from coaches, risk assessment or other relevant information.

Procedure

Following a significant illness, injury, surgery, medical intervention or similar, the following process shall be followed.

  1. The member must submit to the Committee a certificate of fitness from their specialist or medical practitioner. The certificate must specify the type of dragon boat activity the member is fit for – coaching (from the front of the boat), paddling or sweeping.
  2. The Committee shall consider the advice of the medical practitioner and do a risk analysis of the member’s return to active participation.
  3. Based on the risk analysis, the Committee shall provide the member with a plan for resumption of active participation. That plan shall include description of activities allowed, timeline for resumption and other requirements the Committee feels appropriate.
  4. The Committee may seek the advice of any of the endorsed coaches and/or sweeps regarding the content of the plan.
  5. All members returning to active participation after significant illness, injury, surgery, medical intervention or similar shall wear a PFD until they have successfully completed a new safety swim test. This requirement is regardless of how recently the member completed a safety swim test prior to their illness, injury, surgery, medical intervention or similar.
  6. If the member is a sweep, when the Committee approves return to sweeping they must have another L3 (or higher) sweep in the boat with them for their first four runs.
